What is the difference between a concept designer and a futurist?

Is it how the user perceives it? is it in the aesthetics? is it technological/manufacturing advancements?

Answer :

  • A futurist takes into account factors such as social trends, psychology, climate, terrain, politics, transportation and food supplies, as well as cultural distinctions, mixes in a healthy dose of hard science, and makes very accurate guesses about what is most likely to happen.
  • A concept designer takes an idea, often written by someone else, and makes a model or a painting or a print of what that idea can look and act like. We’re the people who design the armor a movie character wears, the look of a starship, the way spacesuits are shaped, the shape and feel of the tools for working on Mars.
So, it’s akin to a visionary architect vs. a very clever contractor.

concept designers are focused on a tangible output, generally using their direct expertise. I usually find they are subject matter experts with design experience.

A Futurist, on the other hand, is more of a facilitator who works with people to create an outcome some time in the future. Futurists aren’t necessarily a subject matter expert on anything except how to use Strategic Foresight techniques to facilitate consensus of the most likely and desired outcomes from other people who are subject matter experts.
