Toyota Corolla - Refreshed styling, the carryover of characters. Toyota Corolla makes us humble. Not only when we are driving one - that will keep one's ego in check - but when we think about the Corolla low which is not only the best - selling compact car in America, but the bestselling automotive nameplate. 

Toyota sold almost 1,000 things every day by 2015 in the United States alone - including holidays and weekends. This, despite the fact that the Corolla has ever appeared in one car and driver, 10Best cars list. In our eyes, the Corolla is always a safe choice but never very interesting. Millions of Americans choose to stay. Like we said, humbled.

Toyota credit, companies try to make some interesting changes when the Corolla generation 11 landed as of 2014 model. The result, however, is uncertain, and 132-hp four-cylinder engine was still woefully underpowered compared to the competition. We hope that a mid-cycle update will see the Toyota aligning design and brings enhanced strength ran earlier this year when the 2017 model was introduced at the New York auto show. 

While the trim options increased from four (L, LE, LE Eco, and S) to six (L, LE, LE, XLE, Eco plus the sportier SE and XSE)suffix to better align with other Toyota models, the top product is a warm winter. An anniversary edition to commemorate 50 years in the production of the Corolla is about as interesting as it is.

High-spec Corolla models have new headlights, all models using the new taillamp innards and restyled guest fascias, and all but the base model L and LE Eco roll on wheels redesigned 16 and 17 inch. Inside, subtle trim changes add the more three-dimensional look of the dashboard and a soft touch panel on the passenger side. Low-class models also saw a new gauge cluster combines information 3.5-inch screen, while in dressier thanks screen 2.6-inch color LCD. 

Automatic climate control looks classy now, too. Two new trim levels, sports sense of SE and XSE, took a left where the Corolla S is active, with sporty-ish looks inside and out, more aggressive assisted sports seats, a revised suspension, and - on a new leather upholstery - the XSE.

Perhaps most significantly, Corolla all come standard with the Toyota driver safety aid package sense-P, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert steering assist, automatic high beams, and radar cruise control. Toyota even throws in a backup camera with lines projected path on all models. Considering how few cars of this segment offers all the features of the modern, much less as a standard, we think customers will be delighted.

Unfortunately, nothing has changed under the hood, so while the Corolla may be dressed a little better and be better able to save you from yourself, nothing is too enthusiastic about getting up to speed. We sampled three 2017 Corolla - Eco LE, SE manual transmission and with continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) programmed to emulate the gearbox actually - and the "slow" is the most generous way we could describe one of them. 

With only 132 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque, 1.8-liter four-banger/CVT combination on most models feel just slow because we remember from the test Corolla S 2014 us, of which 10.5 seconds have passed in the meantimemoseyed Street from the rest to 60 mph. it was a few seconds of speed essentially the whole of the compact car field, including the Honda Civic, Chevrolet Cruze, Mazda 3, and Volkswagen Golf. That said, we were surprised and quite pleased with XSE CVT, which operates six fixed ratios in the sports mode and predictive downshifts are served when we slow down for corners.

Fortunately, Toyota not only continues to offer a six-speed manual transmission Corolla model, 6MT SE (which costs $1220 more complete CVT SE), but it has increased the shifter to make the Act of rowing through the gears feel more positive. 

And with so little power available, your line will be. That said, 2016 Corolla S manual we tested earlier this year produced an acceleration time is much better than 8.5 seconds to 60 mph (not to brag about), and we expect the same for the 2017 model.

Interestingly, the LE model Eco 1.8-litre, set up specifically to maximize fuel economy, lost 2 lb-ft of torque but gains 8 horsepower for a total of 140, and feel no less satisfying to drive than the sportier XSE. Underbody panels and rear spoilers to improve aerodynamics also contribute to fuel economy advantage LE Eco enough. It is EPA rated at 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway versus 27-28/35-36 mpg for a full CVT on other models.

Predictably, Corolla LE Eco felt weak at the corners as any Corolla we've ever driven. With the front tire howl to estimate them to surrender immediately to the driving enthusiast. Models of SE and XSE living far better planted when we were approaching their limits, although keeping up with Mazda 3 or Volkswagen Golf winding two-lane remains beyond the scope of their abilities. Slow Steering response is off-center, coupled with almost no feel, do their part to prevent such shenanigans, anyway.

The things that are important.

Most of the buyers of the Corolla, we suspect, was concerned about the behavior of at-the-limit, steering feel, or how much more interesting the competitors may be to drive. It's quiet? Whether it's a rises smoothly? Will fit in? Is it reliable? Yes, it is a good thing. 

To them, we can have a new Corolla that does indeed look like a fine horse and quiet as usual. For the class, have a big back seat and a good-size trunkAnd if past is prologue, most Corolla will continue to run indefinitely, provided that the oil be changed every now and then and there is gas in the tank.

With prices starting at $19.365 for L Corolla for $23.545 for XSE (increased an average of $281, or approximately 1.5 percent, from 2016, according to various models of Toyota), Corolla prices aggressively to defend here is great. 

Of course, we can suggest a dozen another compact car that would be more fun to drive, starting with the Mazda 3 and the VW Golf and includes the Honda Civic, Chevrolet Cruze, the Hyundai Elantra, are the Ford Focus, Kia Forte, and Mini Cooper (most offering a manual transmission in several levels of trim).
